The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil, has blamed the institution management over the harassment of a female student by some unscrupulous elements at the University.
The union said the possibility of such an incident has long been coming due to mishandling of students’ issues by the management of the University.
This is contained in a statement jointly signed by ASUU branch Chairman, Muhammad Sani Gaya, Chairman and Murtala Muhammad Secretary respectively and obtained by PRIME TIME NEWS on Thursday.
PRIME TIME NEWS has learned that about 17 students of the university had been arrested for allegedly assaulting their female colleagues for not wearing gown otherwise called “Abaya.”
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Shehu Alhaji Musa said following reports of harassment of female students by the “male gang” members, the authorities swung into action.
He said the university had constituted a committee, headed by DVC Academics, to identify the unscrupulous students involved and recommend immediate disciplinary actions to be taken against the culprits without delay, to serve as a deterrent to others.
According to the statement, the Union has severally warned relevant authorities through the media and other administrative channels.
‘’The management has for long commercialized education in the University by admitting students far beyond its capacity, perhaps, in order to generate revenue, rather than prioritizing academic quality, ‘’ the statement said.
‘’This situation makes bad elements to come in, in droves, overshadowing the bright and well-behaved students who are in the majority. Painfully, the funds generated are not put to proper use. ‘’
‘’Recently, the University management took a bank loan of about N200million to purchase
exotic cars that may be financed by students’ registration fees, while leaving a burnt female hostel unattended to. ‘’
‘’The inadequacy of students’ hostel has forced a large number of students to stay off-campus, far from the care of the University authority, further worsening the act of indiscipline.’’
‘’The Union will continue to put pressure on relevant authorities to right the wrong incessantly carried out.’’
