Emir of Kano’s Visit to Edo: Aminu Bayero is a Nigerian Symbol of Unity-Chief Nwobi

A Lagos based business man Chief Chukwunonso Nwobi has described the emir of Kano Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Nigeria’s symbol of unity who committed his first days on the throne of Kano emirate to converging peace and unity among the nation’s traditional institutions and their people.

Cheif Nwobi spoke to newsmen during the emir of Kano’s visit to the oba of Benin. he believes the two monarchs having a long history of existence are in the best position of ensuring Nigeria’s unity in diversity.

Chief Nwobi said historical records have shown that the Benin Kingdom was “one of the oldest and most highly developed states in the coastal hinterland of West Africa which was formed around the 11th century AD, and lasted until it was annexed by the British Empire in 1897.”

Chief Nwobi, argued that this historical antecedent alone distinguished Benin Kingdom from other kingdoms across the country.

“Similarly, if you look at the history of Kano kingdom which was formed since 999 as an independent Hausa state until the Jihad of Usman Danfodio that established Fulani Dynasty in 1905, during which Kano became the largest and most prosperous province of the empire in Northern Nigeria and across west African sub region down to the British conquest of Kano in 1903.

According to Chief Nwobi, this and many other similarities, make Kano and Benin kingdoms important traditional institutions for the peaceful coexistence of Nigerians regardless of their tribe or religious beliefs.

He said, businesses and the exchange of goods and services had long existed between Kano and Benin Kingdom which the two monarchs must work hard to revive and to ensure more mutual understanding and tolerance among their people.

“Just like Oba of Benin, I know his highness Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero is a man of peace, unity and progress, he believes relationships among the nation’s traditional institutions is the basis upon which peace can be maintained”

Chief Chukwunonso Nwobi, therefore commended the people of Benin for the hospitality and warm reception shown to the Emir and his entourage.
