Boat mishap : Kebbi Exco prayed for deceased, appreciate support from Nigerians

The Kebbi State Executive Council held special prayers for the repose of souls who lost their lives in the Warra boat mishap which led to the death of over 100 passengers last week.

The meeting which was presided over by Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu comprised the SSG, Head of Service, Commissioners, some Permanent Secretaries and some Special Advisers was held at the Council Chamber, Government House, Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the meeting, the Hon. Commissioner of Information, Barrister Rakiya Tanko Ayuba-Haruna said special prayers were held for those who lost their lives in the boat accident as well as commiserated with families of the victims and the entire inhabitants of Warra on the fatal accident.

Barrister Rakiya said ‘ The meeting was presided over by Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu on ,Wednesday 2nd June, 2021 .

‘ Special prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for the family members for Allah to give them added strength to bear the lost of their love ones and also to the people of Kebbi State who have been shocked by the tremendous lost of lives that has occurred.

‘ All members of the Executive Council, the SSG, the Special Adviser, State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, as well as officials of the Ministry of Works were in attendance ‘

‘ We are all here to give press statement over this special council meeting and the way forward to avert such incidences from happening in the near future, May Almighty Allah rest their souls in peace’, she prayed.

According to the Commissioner, the tragic boat mishap at Warrah necessicitated the convening of an emergency Executive Council meeting to reappraising the incident .

The Special Adviser, SEMA, Alhaji Sani Dododo announced that the meeting resolved to establishing a committee to thoroughly investigate the boat mishap to avoid future occurrence.

He said that the Committee would operate in collaboration with Niger State Government while input would be entertained from relevant Federal agencies including the National Inland Waterways, NIWA and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.

He further said that the committee would seek contribution from the Red Cross, association of boat and canoe operators ,Yauri Local Government as well as other Local Government Areas located at the River bank.

Dododo made it clear that the Exco specifically outlawed overloading of boats and canoes,night travel, operations of boats and canoes by underaged children, while the use of sea worthy boats and canoes as well as the use of life jackets by passengers and boat operators must be enforced.

In addition, intensive and extensive public enlightenment campaign should be vigorously pursued on safe marine transportation .

The executive council commented Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu for providing conducive atmosphere to operators in the maritime industry in the state to function safely and smoothly.

The session was also appreciative of the sympathetic gesture of President Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Senate,Speaker House of Representatives, Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, members of National and State Assemblies, the Sultan of Sokoto and other traditional rulers, local Government Chairmen and all those who commiserated with the Government and people of Kebbi State.

Alhaji Sani Dododo further recognized the positive and effective role played by the Media, Security Agencies and Volunteers on managing the mishap.

On donation received by the State Government, the Special Adviser, SEMA explained that the modalities were being perfected on the disbursement of money towards mitigating the hardship and pain suffered by the families of the victims.

He said as at now, ninety seven bodies have been retrieved and buried of which seven bodies were identified as indigenes of Zamfara State.

Twenty two people were rescued alive and reunited with their families, he added.
