ASUU-KUST Reaffirms It’s Support To Ongoing ASUU National Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil (ASUU-KUST) says it is strongly in support of the Union’s stand to forstall the looming crisis in the Nigerian University System.

The Branch Union made this affirmation during its congress meeting held on Thursday, 24th September, 2020 in Kano.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the KUST ASUU Branch Chairperson, Comrade Muhammad Sani Gaya and Secretary, Comrade Murtala Muhammad and issued to PRIME TIME NEWS.

The statetment expressed anger over the sorry state of education in the country and Federal Government’s failure to fulfil the promises to ASUU, saying that the system has suffered from chronic underfunding, poor infrastructure as well as condition of service.

“The laxity, callousness and insincerity of the Federal Government to tackle the issues resulted in brain drain and continous deterioration of quality of education generally.”

The statement added that that union has every capacity and resources that will reposition the Nigerian University System, “we have engaged the FG severally which resulted in ASUU/FGN Agreement of 2009, MoU of 2013 and MoAs of 2017 and 2019.”

PRIME TIME NEWS recalled that ASUU has for years been accusing Federal Government that it has failed to honour the mutually and duly signed Agreements.

“To further worsen the quagmire, Government recently introduced a bizarre IPPIS which undermines University Autonomy and grossly incompatible with the University System.” The statetment said.

The statement also said that President Buhari’s administration has subjugated members of the union in University of Maiduguri and Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike into untold hardship.

According to ASUU, lecturers’ salaries in UNIMAID and MOU has been withheld since February, 2020 and members in other universities have their salaries stopped since July, 2020.

“ASUU-KUST is calling on students, parents, Civil Society Organisations and other stakeholders to prevail on Government to fulfil its promises in addressing the issues at stake and conclude the ongoing renegotiation to avoid prolonging the ongoing strike.”ASUU-KUST Reaffirms It’s Support To Ongoing ASUU National Strike.
